General Comments

The DGVs supersede the ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) interim indicative working level for iron in marine water.

Some of the DGVs may be close to background levels in some locations. The Water Quality Guidelines provide guidance for situations where a DGV is below natural background concentrations.

The total iron concentration or, preferably, the potentially bioavailable fraction (i.e. weak-acid extract) of an unfiltered environmental water sample should be compared with the DGVs. Filtered/dissolved fractions of iron should not be compared with the DGVs. See Section 4.3 and Appendix A of the iron in marine water DGV technical brief for further details.

The DGVs and the information in the corresponding DGVs technical brief for this toxicant should be used in accordance with the detailed guidance provided on the Australian and New Zealand Guidelines for Fresh and Marine Water Quality website.
